Ancient Messene

A monumental journey into the soul of Peloponnese, where ancient ruins tell stories of endurance and artistic mastery.

About Old Messene

Ancient Messene is one of the most remarkable and well-preserved treasures of the Peloponnese. Set in a lush valley, this site whisks you back to an era of grandeur, where the harmony of nature and stone remains forever frozen in time.

For guests of Evelyn's Guest House, a visit to Messene is a unique highlight. Remote from busy tourist trails, it offers the quietude needed to embrace the spirit of slow travel and the profound cultural depth of authentic Greece.

History & Meaning

Ancient Messene is a premier archaeological site in Greece, preserved in its nearly original state. Founded in 369 BC by the Theban general Epaminondas, the city became a beacon of freedom for Messenians after centuries of Spartan rule. Unlike other ancient cities, Messene was never fully built over, allowing us to walk the very same streets that people tread upon thousands of years ago.

Today, the site inspires with its scale and integration into the landscape. History breathes in the silence of olive groves: the massive stadium, the elegant theatre, and fortified walls tell of past glory without the rush of crowds. It is a perfect space for a peaceful immersion into the past, something we and our guests at Evelyn’s Guest House truly cherish.
