Ancient Messene is a premier archaeological site in Greece, preserved in its nearly original state. Founded in 369 BC by the Theban general Epaminondas, the city became a beacon of freedom for Messenians after centuries of Spartan rule. Unlike other ancient cities, Messene was never fully built over, allowing us to walk the very same streets that people tread upon thousands of years ago.
Today, the site inspires with its scale and integration into the landscape. Getting there: The drive takes about 30–40 minutes along the scenic roads of Messinia. Follow the signs towards Messini and then to the Ancient Messene Archaeological Zone.
